Doctor Convicted in $4.7M DME Medicare Fraud, Faces Up to 20 Years

Dr. Sofjan Lamid attended “healthcare fairs” at Louisiana churches and other locations and prescribed power wheelchairs to Medicare beneficiaries as part of what a federal jury has now determined was no more than a multi-million Medicare fraud scheme. Dr. Lamid and co-conspirators Henry Lamont Jones, Ernest Payne, and Nnanta Felix Ngari each were convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and to pay and receive illegal health care kickbacks, with each count carrying a maximum of 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.  According to information presented at trial, reports DoJ, “the doctors, including Dr. Lamid, were paid illegal kickbacks by Payne and Jones based on the number of power wheelchair prescriptions generated at the health fairs.”
