Clinic Owner Pleads Guilty to DME False Claims for Unnecessary Arthritis Kits

Clifford Ubani pleaded guilty last week to a $6.3 million Medicare fraud scheme and faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. According to a DoJ press release, Ubani hired co-conspirators to recruit Medicare beneficiaries to his company Family Healthcare Services and submitted false claims for durable medical equipment (DME), including “arthritis kits.” Pursuant to the plea agreement, “Ubani admitted that he paid kickbacks to the recruiters for their referrals.” False claims for such “Arthritis Kits” is a category of DME fraud on the rise over the past year.
