Alabama Pharmacy Tech Pleads Guilty to Healthcare Fraud for Illegal Prescription Reimbursements

July 27, 2010

Charlotte Turley, a former K-Mart Pharmacy technician, pleaded guilty to stealing more than $330,000 by filing illegal prescription reimbursements. FraudBlawg previously reported her indictment, here. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lloyd Peeples, who is well-known for his handling of high-profile healthcare cases. Last year, Peeples handled the much-publicized False Claims Act whistleblower settlement with national hospice provider Southerncare. The $24.7 million settlement resulted from a whistleblower suit brought by Frohsin & Barger and represents the largest Medicare hospice fraud case in the country and the largest whistleblower settlement in Alabama history. Peeples’ prosecution of Turley could result in as much as ten years in prison, restitution, and criminal fines. She will be sentenced on November 18 at 11 a.m. at the federal courthouse in Huntsville, Alabama.
