Retired Nurse Guilty of Health Care Fraud

February 1, 2010

Sylvia Smith is guilty of supplying medical codes and false information to Trucare Medical Equipment Services in return for kickbacks. Smith received 10% of what Medicare paid Trucare for every patient she had referred. Additionally, she was paid $300 per patient she referred to TruCare by the owner Noel Jhagroo. A part of the scheme included billing Medicare for expensive orthotics but giving their patients inexpensive kits. When patients would not accept the kits they were paid $100 to accept them. According to the DoJ, Smith could receive a 10 year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. Jhagroo plead guilty to his role in this crime, as reported previously by FraudBlawg.
